Building information modeling (BIM) adoption for enhanced legal and contractual management in construction projects

Building information modeling (BIM) adoption offers significant benefits for construction projects, including enhanced collaboration and legal/contractual management. However, the impacts of BIM deployment on construction contracts and dispute resolution remain unclear. This research analyzed the regulatory and legal implications of BIM adoption in construction industry via a framework evaluating Contractual Frameworks (CF), Dispute Resolution (DR), Legal Awareness (LA), and Risk Management (RM). Fifteen qualitative interviews with construction industry experts provided key insights. The results showed CF, DR, and LA have a large positive impact on BIM adoption, while RM has a smaller effect. Specifically, clearly defined BIM protocols in contracts, efficient dispute resolution mechanisms, and legal knowledge of BIM are essential to ensure effective deployment. These findings imply construction project managers should proactively address contractual and legal factors to manage risks, encourage collaboration, and adhere to regulations when implementing BIM. This research makes a significant contribution by addressing the lack of empirical insights on the contractual and legal aspects of BIM adoption. The qualitative methodology provides in-depth perspectives from experienced industry practitioners. The findings offer valuable insights for stakeholders worldwide seeking to leverage BIM. Further comparative research across regions and industries would continue to advance comprehension of the legal implications of BIM adoption.

Critical barriers to the adoption of integrated digital delivery in the construction industry

Integrated digital delivery (IDD) integrates digital technologies, data, and platforms to streamline work processes and connect all stakeholders involved in a project throughout the lifecycle. IDD provides significant value to stakeholders, but there is a slow uptake of the IDD in the construction industry. This study investigated the barriers to IDD adoption in the Hong Kong construction industry. Data was gathered using a questionnaire survey and analysed using descriptive statistical analysis, weighted correlation network analysis, and fuzzy synthetic evaluation. The results indicate that the five most critical barriers are rooted in relevant skill gaps, requirements for frequent model updates across the project lifecycle, higher investment requirements, interoperability of data from different software, and limited organizational budgets for IDD. The weighted network model showed that the most influential set of barriers are linked to stakeholder attitudes and the bespoke technical requirements of the IDD approach. Except for the legal dimension, the financial, organizational, technical, data, stakeholder, and industry group of barriers, each significantly impede IDD adoption in the construction industry. Thus, the study successfully explained why IDD adoption has been low in the construction industry and provides a fertile ground to develop interventions to promote wider adoption, where necessary.

Evaluating the drivers of green supply chain management adoption in Iran's construction industry

PurposeThe construction industry contributes to economic development by providing physical equipment and infrastructures. However, it also generates some undesirable outputs such as waste and environmental pollution, especially in developing countries. Due to the importance of the green supply chain management (GSCM) philosophy, for solving these problems, the current study aims to evaluate the drivers of GSCM adoption in the construction industry of Iran.Design/methodology/approachThis research uses a descriptive and practical methodology. The participated experts in the study include senior managers of the construction department in Rasht municipality who had relevant academic education and suitable experiences in urban and industrial construction. The experts took part in both qualitative and quantitative phases of the research, namely verification of the drivers extracted from literature and ranking them in ascending order. In the quantitative phase, Step-Wise Weight Assessment Ratio Analysis (SWARA) as a new multi-criterion decision-making (MCDM) method is used to evaluate the drivers of GSCM adoption using MATLAB software.FindingsThe results show that environmental management systems, green product design and innovational capability with weights of 0.347, 0.218 and 0.143 are the most significant sub-drivers, respectively. The less important factor is an investment in environmental technology.Originality/valueThis study evaluated the motivational factors of GSCM in the construction industry. The findings help governments, companies and green supply chain (GSC) managers to improve their knowledge about GSCM and make the best decisions to decrease environmental pollution.

Assessment of symmetries and asymmetries on barriers to circular economy adoption in the construction industry towards zero waste: A survey of international experts

This study evaluates simultaneously the symmetries and asymmetries on the classification of barriers to circular economy (CE) adoption in the building construction industry (BCI) of developing and developed economies. This is crucial because the vagueness of the impacts of CE barriers in extant studies affects encyclopaedic and specific CE policy formulation. Consequently, feedbacks from 140 CE experts across 39 developing and developed economies were analysed. Fuzzy synthetic evaluation (FSE) method was deployed to objectively determine the significant impacts of the barriers, whereas the Mann-Whitney U test was applied to identify significant differences in experts' opinions between the two economies. The FSE results indicated that organizational, information technology, and infrastructure and logistics barriers are the most critical to global CE adoption. The Mann-Whitney U test reveals a significant difference in the experts’ perspectives between developing and developed economies on regulatory, information technology, and economic and market barriers. Therefore, they are perceived as specific barriers as they impact CE adoption in BCI differently across the two economies. However, infrastructure and logistics, and organizational barriers are classified as general barriers. The findings of this study underscored the contextuality of barriers to CE adoption in BCI and demonstrated the need for generic and specific policy development. Also, the significance indices of the classification of the barriers using FSE method serve as an allocative function that will help policymakers and stakeholders allocate requisite resources to the most profound barriers towards achieving global systemic circularity and zero construction waste.

State of Building Information Modelling (BIM) adoption in Iraq

Building Information Modelling (BIM) is one of the most promising technologies in the Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry. However, while a number of studies have shown the benefits of BIM, especially in infrastructure projects, barriers exist to actualising these benefits through implementation. In Iraq, there is a lack of BIM adoption among construction firms because industry practitioners are not interested in BIM and the firms do not have the adequate experience in this technology. The focus of this study is to investigate the current state of BIM adoption in construction industry in Iraq and determine the barriers that prevent its widespread. The key findings of this study are; first habitual resistance to change has the most adverse effect to BIM implementation in the country, second AutoCAD, STAAD Pro and Revit are the most common BIM tools used by BIM adopters in Iraq and finally the results indicate that BIM adoption is not satisfactory because the majority of respondents had only 3 to 6 years’ experience working with BIM Introduction.

Examination of the Levels of Development of Building Information Models in the Nigerian Construction Industry

BIM can be used to illustrate the entire building lifecycle, from cradle to inception, design and demolition and materials reuse; quantities and properties of materials, which can be easily extracted from the model; and the scope of works, including management of project targets and facilities management throughout the building’s life. The implementation of BIM in projects or organization is in phases and building information models can be developed as 2D, 3D, 4D, 5D and 6D BIM depending on the stage of BIM implementation and level of details required. This study examined the levels of details of building information models being generated by two hundred and eighty two construction professionals in Lagos State, Nigeria using respondents driven sampling technique. Frequency distribution and percentage, clustered bar chart, mean ranking, Kruskal Wallis test and Fisher exact test were used to analyse the data obtained from the respondents. The study found that the implementation of BIM in the study area is for visualization purpose. The findings also revealed that the levels of generating 2D and 3D BIM were very high in the study area; and that 3D architectural model, 3D architectural and structural model, and 3D architectural and building services model were the most developed variants of 3D BIM. It was concluded that that the status of BIM adoption in construction industry in Lagos State, Nigeria is at the visualization phase.Keywords: BIM details, BIM, BIM development, 4D BIM, federated BIM.

ASSESING THE VARIOUS PROBLEMS FACING IN ARRANGING APPROPIRATE LABOUR AND QUALITY MATERIALS FOR HIGH RISE BUILDING WORKS AND PREPARING REMEDIAL MEASURES AND A FLOW-CHART FOR ADOPTION

A big major, continental concern in construction industry is arranging the labour and quality materials accordingly. The organizations which don’t recognize the upcoming problems due to mismanagement of labour and material works have justifiably been forced out of the mainstream of construction activity. A good project management is needed to drastically reduce the problems facing in labour and material works, which intern increases the chances of success. This paper concentrates on assessing the various problems facing in arranging appropriate labour and quality materials for high rise building works. The objective of the project is to study and analyze the various factors that affect labour and material works and to provide an effective flowchart with remedial measures which helps to reduce the problems arising from labour and quality material works in the construction industry. A set of questionnaires about labour and quality material works has been prepared, categorized into 7 sections and then distributed it to various companies and then analyzed. The analyzed and ranked data has been used to prepare remedial measures and a flowchart for adoption in construction industry.
